Exotic Leather in Canada FAQ

  • Let us know which product in our shop you are interested in, along with which kind of leather you would like us to make it with. If you are unsure, please ask us for design advice! We will send back photos of potential hides to make sure you get exactly what you want.

  • Yes, we require a 50% deposit for us to begin the order and paperwork. The remainder will need to be settled after the product is complete for us to ship it to the customer.

  • The process involves finding and brokering the right hide, along with extensive paperwork. A large amount of time must be committed to merely acquiring the leather, before a long and precise crafting process can begin. We aim for 1-2 month to complete your order, though this may take longer in some cases.

  • We would suggest keeping your new piece within Canada to avoid any chance of potential seizure by customs officials.

  • The CITES paperwork must be completed by the exporter, therefore, fees are at the discretion of said exporter, and can be anywhere from several hundred to one thousand dollars.

  • Leather, including exotics, are typically the byproduct of the food industry or invasive species population control. While some leathers are farmed, the entire animal is used and can help support the local community.

  • Those leathers are imitations made by embossing the pattern into a calfskin hide. They fail to capture the luster and beauty of the authentic leather, and are an alternative for those unable to attain an authentic product.

  • Exotic leathers are sourced from their native locations, or places they have become invasive.

    While crocodile from Italy may sound prestigious, there are no crocodiles in Europe, making this statement only partially true. The skins are typically harvested in Asia or America, and may be shipped to Europe for further tanning.

    A majority of major fashion houses own tanneries in Asia that produce world class leather, because the skins are local to the area anyway. We work with tanneries and distributors from Spain, Italy, Singapore, America, France, Indonesia, and anywhere else that fine leather is produced. We only work with the finest suppliers, since we intend to make the finest products.

  • We retain all unused remnant for use at our discretion. This is to prevent exotic leather acquired by us from circulating without our knowledge. All exotic products produced from Pila Luxuria will be logged in our internal records with customer information and relevant import paperwork.

  • Porosus crocodile is considered by some to be at the top of the luxury food chain. This leather is in high demand and can be hard to acquire, but is of tremendous beauty and of extremely high quality.

  • Yes, we do have access to tanneries that can accommodate, depending on your desire. Please note custom work will likely come with higher fees, as most tanneries require a minimum order amount for custom work.

  • Crocodiles tend to have larger scales, and alligators are smaller overall. Look for the small dot called the ISO pore on the scales, which can be found on crocodiles, but not alligators.
