Crocodile Leather Bracelets

Crocodile is the skin we get asked about most, and the one most worth explaining before you buy it. Himalayan crocodile — the belly-cut, small-scaled hide we reserve for our highest bracelets — has a scale pattern so even it can look manufactured until you feel the give of real skin under your thumb. Broader saltwater and Nile crocodile, cut from further down the flank, carries a bolder plate and takes colour with more contrast: the cobalt and denim dyes we run sit deep in the grain rather than sitting on top of it, which is why they do not scratch through to a lighter base the way a poorly tanned skin will.

Every bracelet here is built one of two ways. The magnet bracelet is a continuous leather band closed by a concealed rare-earth magnet, worn like a cuff with no visible hardware — it does not adjust, so we ask for a wrist measurement to the nearest eighth of an inch before we cut. The clasp bracelet mounts a narrower crocodile panel on a stainless steel bangle with a fold-over clasp, which does adjust across a small range and is the better choice if you are buying for someone whose wrist size you are guessing at.

Crocodile wears the way good crocodile is supposed to: the scales burnish slightly at the high points of contact — the inside of the wrist, the underside near the clasp — and the leather softens without losing the plate structure that makes it crocodile rather than a stamped imitation. That is patina, not damage, and after a year of daily wear it is the reason a crocodile bracelet looks better used than new. What shortens its life is water and sun: keep it off your wrist in the shower or the pool, since standing water works into the scale seams and stiffens the hide as it dries, and rotate pieces out of direct sunlight when not worn, since UV fades dyed crocodile faster than almost anything else we carry. Condition it two or three times a year with a cream made for exotic skins, never a generic saddle wax, which sits on the surface and dulls the scale definition instead of feeding the hide underneath it.
